Inclusive Excellence: How Bahrain’s Para Taekwondo Team Made History Through Vision and Community

MANAMA, September 13 – Bahrain’s Para Taekwondo team is breaking boundaries and reshaping the narrative of inclusion in sport. At the heart of this transformation is Free Spirit Dojang, Bahrain’s first disability-inclusive martial arts training center, founded by Fajar Al BinAli who also serves as the national team’s head coach and a certified Para Taekwondo classifier
.
What began as a local initiative to include athletes with impairments in martial arts has now evolved into a national program representing Bahrain across Arab, Asian, and World Championships. Through rigorous training, technical development, and deep community support, the team has achieved historic results all while carrying the Bahraini flag proudly onto international podiums.
“My vision has always been about more than medals,” said Coach Fajar Al BinAli. “It’s about building a sustainable, disciplined, and empowering environment where athletes with disabilities can thrive not just in sport, but in life.”
Under Al BinAli’s leadership, athletes receive more than combat training. The team prioritizes structured coaching, physical conditioning, and mental support, while drawing strength from families and the wider community. This holistic approach has helped Bahrain host the first World Para Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, and gain top rankings in Asia, reflecting not just competitive excellence but a deeper cultural shift toward inclusion.
Looking ahead, Bahrain’s Para Taekwondo team is preparing for the upcoming World Championships, while working to expand its roster to include athletes with a broader range of impairments. The long-term dream? A strong presence at the Paralympic Games.
Coach Al BinAli’s advice to aspiring athletes is clear: “Get into sports early, explore your options, listen to your coaches, and once you find your passion commit fully. Sports can change lives.”
Beyond trophies and titles, Bahrain’s rise in Para Taekwondo signals what’s possible when vision, dedication, and community support align. For the Kingdom and the wider Gulf region, it’s a powerful example of inclusive excellence in action.
