Disney+’s live-action Eragon series remains on track as development continues in 2026

As of January 2026, the long-awaited live-action Eragon television series remains in active development at Disney+, with author Christopher Paolini confirming that the project is “still on track.” While fan excitement has surged online, fuelled by comparisons to other fantasy heavyweights, the series is still progressing through Hollywood’s notoriously slow early stages.

The adaptation, based on Paolini’s bestselling Inheritance Cycle, is being developed by 20th Television for Disney+. Unlike the 2006 film adaptation, which was widely criticized for straying from the source material, the new series aims to deliver a far more faithful and expansive retelling of the beloved fantasy saga.

Current development status

The project has not yet received a full production green light. Paolini has explained that forward momentum is tied to the signing of a major contract, noting that “Hollywood negotiations take forever.” While this has tempered expectations of rapid progress, it has not derailed the series.

Following the resolution of the 2023 Hollywood strikes, Disney reportedly restarted the search for a showrunner and key creative personnel. Paolini remains closely involved, serving as both co-writer and executive producer, an involvement that fans view as crucial to preserving the spirit and depth of the original books.

Throughout 2025, Paolini dedicated much of his time to developing script drafts, laying the groundwork for a long-form adaptation that can explore Alagaësia, its politics, magic system, and characters in far greater detail than a feature film ever could.

What to expect from the series

The Disney+ adaptation is positioned alongside the platform’s growing slate of young adult fantasy series, including Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The goal is a character-driven, world-rich fantasy epic that can unfold over multiple seasons, allowing Eragon’s journey from farm boy to Dragon Rider to develop organically.

As of early 2026, there have been no official casting announcements or confirmed production dates. With physical production yet to begin, industry expectations suggest a premiere before late 2026 is unlikely, with 2027 appearing more realistic if development proceeds smoothly.

For now, fans will need patience, but with Paolini deeply involved and Disney+ committed to long-form fantasy storytelling, the Eragon reboot continues to move steadily toward becoming a reality
