Instagram outage leaves thousands unable to access messages, feed and search

Users of Instagram across the world are reporting widespread disruptions after the platform experienced a major outage, leaving many unable to access key features, including messages, feeds, and search.

The issue began earlier today, with thousands of users noticing that their apps were not functioning properly. So far, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has not issued an official statement explaining the cause of the disruption.

What users are experiencing

According to outage tracking website Downdetector, more than 13,000 problem reports were filed during the morning as users encountered multiple issues across the platform.

Reported problems include difficulties with both the Instagram mobile app and website, as well as several key features:

  • Direct messages not loading, with some users saying their entire inbox appears blank

  • Delayed notifications and failure to send messages

  • Chat themes disappearing from conversations

  • The search function failing to load

  • The feed and timeline not refreshing

  • Server connection errors appearing in the app

Downdetector data indicates that about 85 percent of complaints relate to the app itself, while 11 percent involve the website and roughly 4 percent concern specific features such as the feed and timeline.

However, the actual number of affected users is likely much higher, as Downdetector only records issues that users actively report.

Users report blank messages and missing features

Frustrated users have turned to forums such as Reddit and other platforms to describe the issues they are facing. One user wrote that their message page suddenly appeared empty despite having many conversations.

“Around two hours ago, my message page didn’t show any messages at all, even though I have plenty,” the user said. Another reported that they were unable to access contacts, use the search tool, or scroll through conversations.

A third user said that a shared chat theme had disappeared simultaneously from both their and their friend’s direct message threads.

Cause still unclear

It is not yet clear what triggered the outage. Early signs suggest a possible server-related problem rather than a cyberattack, though this has not been confirmed. Other platforms owned by Meta, including Facebook and WhatsApp, appear to be functioning normally, indicating the issue may be limited specifically to Instagram.

The disruption is not unprecedented. A similar global outage occurred roughly two years ago, affecting both Instagram and Facebook at the same time.
For now, users have been advised to remain patient as engineers work to resolve the problem. While the company has yet to comment publicly, the scale of the outage suggests a fix may already be underway.
