A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Friday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

Mindanao, part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to frequent seismic activity due to tectonic movements. Local disaster response teams and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) are expected to provide updates and safety advisories.
