Riyadh Becomes First Middle East City to Receive Global Active City Certification
Riyadh has become the first city in the Middle East to receive the Global Active City (GAC) certification, marking a major milestone in the Saudi capital’s efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, physical activity and community well-being. The announcement was made by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), which led the certification process in collaboration with national partners.
Eng. Ibrahim Al-Sultan, CEO of RCRC, said the achievement reflects the continued support and ambitious vision of the Kingdom’s leadership, which has enabled Riyadh to make significant progress in improving quality-of-life indicators in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. He highlighted that the recognition underscores the city’s growing regional and global leadership in enhancing urban well-being.
Al-Sultan praised the contributions of key partners, including the Ministry of Sport and the Saudi Sports for All Federation, noting that their active role was instrumental in securing the international certification. He also acknowledged the efforts of more than 20 relevant entities, whose collaboration helped embed physical activity into Riyadh’s urban development strategy.
The Global Active City certification is awarded under the Active Well-being Initiative, founded by the Association for International Sport for All (TAFISA) and Evaleo Organization, and supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The designation recognises cities that excel in creating inclusive environments and systems that encourage physical activity across all segments of society.
The certification reaffirms RCRC’s commitment to transforming Riyadh into a city that enables residents and visitors to live healthier, more active lifestyles. This approach aligns with the Quality of Life Program and Saudi Vision 2030 through an integrated, citywide strategy that expands access to public spaces, walking and cycling paths, sports facilities and community-based programmes.
Riyadh’s model brings together the sport, health, transport, education and urban planning sectors to create a supportive and inclusive urban environment. The Global Active City designation reflects the capital’s measurable progress in infrastructure, governance systems, policy frameworks and community initiatives aimed at strengthening public health, increasing participation in physical activity and supporting long-term, sustainable well-being.
