Saudi Arabia Braces for Severe Weather: Flash Floods, Hail, and High Winds Expected

RIYADH, September 13 – Saudi Arabia is on high alert as severe weather conditions are forecast to impact several regions over the weekend, with the National Center for Meteorology (NCM) warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, flash floods, hail, and strong winds.

In its Friday weather bulletin, the NCM stated that light to moderate thunderstorms are expected over parts of Asir, Al Baha, and Mecca, intensifying to heavy downpours in Jazan, where risks of flash floods and hail are particularly high.

Other regions including Najran, Riyadh, the Eastern Province, and Medina may experience lighter rain showers, while dust storms and strong surface winds are forecast to sweep through southern Riyadh, Najran, and parts of the Eastern Province, potentially reducing visibility and impacting travel.

Fog formation overnight is also expected in southwestern and eastern areas, prompting further caution for drivers and commuters.

Maritime Alerts Issued

The weather service has also issued marine warnings, especially for the southern Red Sea, where northwesterly winds could reach up to 50 km/h, creating waves as high as 2.5 meters. In the Arabian Gulf, winds will vary from northwesterly to southeasterly at 12–38 km/h, generating waves up to 1.5 meters.

Sea conditions are predicted to range from slight to rough, especially during storm surges.

Public Urged to Stay Cautious

The NCM has advised residents in affected areas to:

  • Avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms

  • Monitor official updates

  • Be cautious while driving in reduced visibility

The stormy conditions are expected to persist through the weekend as seasonal weather patterns continue to drive unstable atmospheric activity in the southwestern and central parts of the Kingdom.
