Bahrain Sets Global Record With World’s Largest Rooftop Solar Power Plant

Bahrain has set a new global benchmark in renewable energy with the launch of the world’s largest single-site rooftop solar power plant, marking a major milestone in the kingdom’s journey toward sustainability and carbon neutrality.

The landmark project is being developed by Foulath Holding, a leading industrial group specializing in steel and iron, in partnership with Yellow Door Energy, the region’s foremost sustainable energy developer, according to the Bahrain News Agency.

Announced during the Gateway Gulf 2025 Forum, hosted by the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB), the project will generate 123 megawatts of solar energy. This includes a 50-megawatt rooftop installation featuring 77,000 solar panels spread across 262,000 square meters at Foulath’s stockyard. The initiative aligns with Bahrain’s Net Zero 2060 objectives and underscores its growing leadership in green energy innovation.

Noor bint Ali Alkhulaif, Minister of Sustainable Development and Chief Executive of the EDB, said the project highlights Bahrain’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. “This pioneering project not only cements Bahrain’s role in renewable energy but also reinforces our commitment to building a sustainable future,” she said.

Meshary Al Judaimi, Chairman of Foulath Holding, emphasized the company’s investment of over USD 250 million in sustainable initiatives, describing the project as a continuation of Foulath’s dedication to responsible industrial growth.

Sherif ElKholy, Managing Director at Actis and Chairman of Yellow Door Energy, called the collaboration a “landmark agreement” that sets a “new global standard in carbon-free steel production.”

Once completed, the site will comprise ten rooftop photovoltaic plants and four ground-mounted installations, collectively producing 200 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually reducing carbon emissions by 90,000 metric tonnes in its first year alone.

Dilip George, Group CEO of Foulath Holding, described the initiative as “a milestone in our decarbonization journey,” reaffirming Bahrain’s position as a regional leader in sustainable industrial transformation.

As project developer, Yellow Door Energy will oversee the financing, design, construction, and operation under a long-term power purchase agreement, enabling Foulath to reduce energy costs and environmental impact while avoiding upfront investment.

The project stands as a symbol of Bahrain’s vision for a greener, more sustainable economy, setting a global precedent for industrial-scale renewable energy integration.
