The overwhelming turnout forced security officials to escort Messi through an alternate route to ensure his safe movement amid the massive crowds.

Messi’s arrival marks his first visit to India since 2011, ending a 14-year wait for Indian fans who have closely followed his legendary career. From chants to banners and packed streets, Kolkata witnessed a celebration rarely seen for an international sports figure.

The football legend last visited the city in 2011, when he played a memorable international friendly at the Salt Lake Stadium. Argentina secured a 1–0 victory over Venezuela in that match, an event that remains etched in the memories of Indian football enthusiasts.

His return has reignited that nostalgia, with fans lining roads, hotels, and venues across Kolkata in hopes of catching a glimpse of the World Cup-winning captain.

Messi’s visit officially launches the much-anticipated GOAT India Tour 2025, which begins in Kolkata. The tour is designed as a nationwide celebration of football, with the Argentine star scheduled to attend multiple engagements in the city before flying to Hyderabad later in the day.

Following Hyderabad, Messi will travel to Mumbai, before concluding the tour in Delhi. The pan-India journey moves from eastern India on December 13, to the south, then west on December 14, and finally wraps up in the north on December 15 bringing Messi’s magic to fans across the country.
