Bahrain Moves to Preserve Cultural Identity with Manama Suq Redevelopment

The centuries-old Manama Suq, long regarded as the beating heart of Bahrain’s cultural and commercial life, is set to undergo a comprehensive redevelopment under a government-backed initiative focused on preservation, modernization, and sustainable tourism development.

Minister of Parliamentary and Shura Council Affairs Ghanim Al Buainain confirmed that His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has issued a Royal Decree mandating the implementation of a national plan to preserve Bahrain’s historic and architectural identity, placing Manama Suq at the center of these efforts. The directive underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to safeguarding its heritage while adapting to contemporary urban needs.

Acting on the instructions of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, a multi-agency committee will be formed to oversee the project. The committee will coordinate between relevant authorities to ensure the redevelopment strikes a careful balance between heritage conservation and modern infrastructure upgrades, while introducing new tourism and cultural initiatives designed to enhance the visitor experience.

The project aims to protect the Suq’s historic fabric, architectural character, and traditional commercial activities, while improving accessibility, public amenities, and overall functionality. Once complete, the redevelopment is expected to reinforce Manama Suq’s role as a living cultural landmark, supporting local businesses and strengthening Bahrain’s position as a regional heritage and tourism destination.
