Mohanlal to Receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023 for Iconic Contribution to Indian Cinema
The Government of India has announced that Malayalam cinema legend Mohanlal will be conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023, the country's highest honour in the field of cinema. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting made the announcement on Saturday, stating that the award recognises Mohanlal’s unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema across multiple languages and genres.
The actor, who has captivated audiences for over four decades, was selected based on the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee. The award will be formally presented at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on September 23.
“Mohanlal’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! The legendary actor, director and producer is being honoured for his iconic contribution to Indian cinema,” the Ministry said in a post on X
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his congratulations to the actor, lauding his exceptional versatility and lifelong dedication to the arts. “Shri Mohanlal Ji epitomises excellence and versatility,” the Prime Minister wrote on X. “With a rich body of work spanning decades, he stands as a leading light of Malayalam cinema and theatre, and is deeply passionate about the culture of Kerala.”
Mohanlal, who has delivered memorable performances not only in Malayalam but also in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films, is celebrated for his effortless acting, charisma, and deep-rooted cultural sensibilities. From intense dramas and action thrillers to experimental theatre, his work has left an indelible mark across mediums.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award adds to Mohanlal’s long list of accolades, including five National Film Awards, the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, and numerous state and international honours. Last year, the prestigious award was presented to veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty for the year 2022.
