Shraddha Kapoor to Portray Lavani Legend Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar in Biopic Vittha

Bollywood actress Shraddha Kapoor is set to take on one of the most challenging and powerful roles of her career in the upcoming biopic Vittha, where she will portray the legendary Maharashtrian Lavani performer Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar.

Known as the “Tamasha Samradni,” or Empress of Tamasha, Vithabai was a pioneering figure in Maharashtra’s folk arts, celebrated for her commanding stage presence, expressive performances, and deep cultural impact. Her life was a portrait of resilience, artistry, and devotion to her craft, making her story one of the most inspiring chapters in Indian performing arts history.

The film, produced by Maddock Films under the banner of Dinesh Vijan, will be directed by Laxman Utekar, who is known for his strong visual storytelling and sensitivity toward rooted narratives. Shooting for Vittha is expected to begin in November 2025, across several districts of Maharashtra, places where Vithabai once lived, performed, and transformed the cultural landscape.

The biopic draws inspiration from Yogiraj Bagul’s acclaimed book Tamasha: Vithabaichya Aayushyacha, which chronicles the artist’s extraordinary life. To ensure authenticity, the filmmakers have acquired official life rights from Vithabai’s family, promising a portrayal that stays true to her legacy and spirit.

One of the most moving anecdotes from her life and one that defines her unmatched dedication recounts how Vithabai once went into labor during a live performance. Undeterred, she reportedly stepped backstage, delivered her child, and returned to the stage to complete her show, an act that has since become part of Tamasha folklore.

Vithabai’s contributions earned her two President’s Medals in 1957 and 1990, recognizing her as one of India’s foremost folk artists. Following her passing in 2002, the Government of Maharashtra instituted the Vithabai Narayangaonkar Lifetime Achievement Award in her honor, preserving her name as a symbol of artistic excellence and passion.

With Shraddha Kapoor stepping into this iconic role, Vittha promises to be more than just a film; it’s poised to be a vibrant cultural tribute to one of Maharashtra’s most beloved legends.
