Manama, Bahrain – June 2025

The National Emergency Management Centre (NEMC) has officially confirmed the full operational readiness of 33 civil emergency shelters located across all five governorates of the Kingdom of Bahrain. This strategic preparedness marks a key step in enhancing national resilience and protecting citizens during natural disasters or other emergency situations.

The shelters, distributed throughout the Capital, Muharraq, Northern, Southern, and Central Governorates, are equipped with essential facilities including first aid supplies, water and food provisions, sleeping areas, sanitation systems, and communication tools. These facilities are maintained in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, Civil Defence, and other key national agencies to ensure swift activation when required.

Major General Abdulaziz Al-Doseri, Director of Civil Defence, emphasized the importance of the initiative:

"These shelters are a vital part of Bahrain’s civil protection strategy. Their operational readiness ensures that in times of need, our citizens have access to safe, secure, and well-equipped locations."

Each shelter is staffed by trained personnel who can provide medical assistance, logistical support, and emergency coordination. Mock drills and readiness assessments were recently conducted to validate infrastructure reliability, staff training, and supply chain logistics.

The announcement comes amid regional efforts to enhance emergency preparedness in response to increasing climate-related risks, urban expansion, and geopolitical uncertainties.

Citizens are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the location of the nearest emergency shelter in their governorate. The NEMC has also launched an awareness campaign through media and social platforms, providing detailed information and guidance on how to respond during emergencies.

This move aligns with Bahrain’s broader vision of fostering a safe and resilient society, and is part of the country’s commitment to international disaster risk reduction frameworks, including the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030.
