Move to Showcase the Best of Bahrain at Airport Terminal Gains Momentum
In early 2026, Bahrain International Airport (BIA) continues to stand at the heart of the Kingdom’s economic and cultural ambitions, with renewed efforts to transform its high-traffic terminal into a platform for Bahraini creativity, entrepreneurship, and heritage.
Building on long-standing parliamentary initiatives led by MP Mohammed Al Olaiwi, proposals remain active to allocate dedicated terminal spaces for Bahraini entrepreneurs. These spaces would allow local businesses to showcase and sell traditional cuisine, snacks, handicrafts, and handmade products, giving travelers a direct cultural touchpoint upon arrival and departure while supporting small and medium enterprises.
Parallel efforts are also underway to enhance the transit passenger experience. In July 2025, the Strategic Thinking Bloc introduced a proposal aimed at repositioning BIA as more than just a transit hub. The plan includes the addition of cinema complexes, children’s play areas, and specialized culinary outlets designed to celebrate Bahraini heritage, particularly catering to passengers on extended layovers.
These initiatives align closely with Bahrain’s broader Economic Strategy for 2026, as the airport targets an ambitious network expansion to 100 destinations. This growth is a key pillar of the Government Plan 2023–2026, which places strong emphasis on strengthening non-oil sectors such as tourism, aviation services, and creative industries.
On the infrastructure front, BIA’s development is being supported by major investments. As of January 2026, the BD26.8 million airport road infrastructure project has entered its third phase, aimed at improving accessibility and easing traffic flow for travelers and logistics operations.
Looking ahead, Bahrain’s aviation profile is set to receive another global boost with the Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS) scheduled for November 18–20, 2026. Several major international aviation companies have already confirmed their participation, reinforcing the Kingdom’s growing status as a regional aviation hub.
Operationally, BIA continues to modernize its passenger experience. In late 2025, the airport renewed its partnership with SITA, ensuring the continued deployment of advanced digital infrastructure and passenger processing systems to support rising traffic volumes and enhance efficiency.
Together, these initiatives reflect Bahrain’s vision of an airport that not only moves people, but also tells the story of the Kingdom, turning every journey through BIA into an opportunity to experience the best of Bahrain.
