Oman releases first polymer one rial commemorative banknote into circulation
The Central Bank of Oman (CBO) officially released the Sultanate’s first-ever polymer one-rial commemorative banknote into general circulation on January 11, 2026, marking His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s Accession Day.
The polymer note has been issued as legal tender and will circulate alongside existing paper banknotes, reflecting Oman’s move towards modern, secure, and durable currency solutions.
Enhanced durability and security
Unlike traditional cotton-based notes, the new one-rial banknote is made from polymer material, offering a longer lifespan and improved resistance to wear and environmental damage. The note also incorporates a range of advanced anti-counterfeiting features, including transparent windows, iridescent color-shifting ink, and a color-shifting foil element featuring the frankincense tree, a symbol closely associated with Oman’s heritage.
The Central Bank of Oman’s logo is rendered in color-shifting ink, adding an additional layer of security and visual distinction.
Design celebrating heritage and progress
Measuring 145 by 76 millimeters, the commemorative banknote highlights Oman’s national identity and development achievements.
