Qatar Provides $434 Million in Financial Aid to Support Lebanon’s Energy Sector

Qatar has announced the provision of approximately $434 million in financial support to Lebanon, with the majority of the funding directed toward the country’s struggling energy sector, according to a statement issued by the Qatar Fund for Development.

The Fund stated that around $400 million of the total assistance will be allocated to supporting Lebanon’s energy sector, with 10 per cent of this amount provided in the form of a grant. The support aims to help address chronic electricity shortages and deteriorating infrastructure that have plagued the country for years.

Qatar has also been extending ongoing assistance to Lebanon by providing grants to support the Lebanese Armed Forces, including funding for fuel supplies and salaries, as part of efforts to maintain institutional stability.

Lebanon is in urgent need of foreign financial assistance to help meet extensive reconstruction costs following the 2024 conflict between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hizbollah, during which Israeli air strikes caused widespread destruction across large parts of the country.

Even prior to the conflict, Lebanon had been facing a prolonged economic crisis marked by fuel shortages, weakened public services and aging infrastructure, particularly in the energy sector. Qatar’s financial support is expected to help alleviate some of these challenges and contribute to stabilisation efforts.
