Arab League, UAE, and UNICEF Launch Second Phase of “Safe Internet for Our Children” Campaign to Protect Children on Social Media
Under the slogan “Safe Internet for Our Children”, the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, in collaboration with the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood of the United Arab Emirates, the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, and UNICEF’s Regional Office, has launched the second regional campaign focused on “Protecting Children on Social Media.” The announcement took place during the 29th session of the Arab Childhood Committee, chaired by the Republic of Djibouti and held virtually, with participation from child protection bodies across the Arab region, as well as representatives from civil society and international organisations.
Reem bint Abdullah Al Falasi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, highlighted the growing influence of social media platforms in shaping children's values, behaviours, and worldviews. She stressed the urgent need to monitor and regulate the content that children are exposed to online, shielding them from extremist ideologies and online exploitation. While acknowledging the impossibility of fully disconnecting children from the digital space due to its central role in education and communication, Al Falasi called for mechanisms that enable children to navigate the internet safely and responsibly. She warned of risks including exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying, online fraud, addiction, and threats to mental health and wellbeing.
The campaign introduces a new animated video series titled “Alpha and Zain”, produced in Arabic, English, and French. This five-episode series follows a modern Arab family and presents real-life scenarios that children may encounter online. The episodes cover essential topics such as responsible internet usage, the ethical use of AI, cyberbullying awareness, managing screen time, achieving a healthy online-offline balance, and identifying misinformation. The series is designed to engage children while educating them and their families on the safe and ethical use of digital platforms.
This initiative marks the second phase of the regional “Safe Internet for Our Children” campaign, following the first edition launched in 2021 under the title “Alpha Giga and Giga.” It reflects the collective commitment of Arab nations to promoting digital safety and upholding the rights of children in the virtual world. By focusing on awareness, education, and regional cooperation, the campaign provides children, parents, and educators with vital tools to navigate the internet safely, report online abuse, and build resilience in the face of evolving digital threats.
Through this campaign, the Arab League and its partners affirm the importance of joint action to protect children’s digital experiences, ensuring that young generations can benefit from the opportunities of modern technology while being shielded from its risks. The initiative not only promotes a safer digital environment for children across the Arab world but also nurtures a generation capable of using technology ethically and responsibly in service of progress, knowledge, and shared values.
