Bahrain launches first phase of AI-powered smart traffic cameras to boost road safety
Motorists in Bahrain are being urged to stay alert as the General Directorate of Traffic prepares to roll out the first phase of its AI-powered smart camera network aimed at strengthening road safety across the kingdom.
The new system, launching tomorrow, uses high-definition cameras and artificial intelligence to automatically detect a range of traffic violations that contribute to accidents and congestion.
What the cameras will monitor
One of the key focus areas is lane discipline. The cameras will target drivers who remain in the fast lane without overtaking or who travel significantly below the speed limit, a behavior authorities say disrupts traffic flow and increases collision risks.
Mobile phone use while driving is also being closely monitored. The system can identify handheld device usage, an offense in Bahrain that typically carries fines ranging from BD 50 to BD 500. In cases where phone use leads to an accident, penalties may include imprisonment.
Seatbelt compliance is another priority, with both drivers and front-seat passengers subject to monitoring under the new system. In addition, the cameras will detect vehicles using incorrect lanes, including trucks or heavy vehicles traveling in lanes not designated for their category.
How drivers can check fines
Motorists can monitor their traffic records, review violations, and pay any outstanding fines through the Bahrain. the eGovernment Portal or the eTraffic app, authorities said.
The General Directorate of Traffic has stressed that the initiative is intended to encourage safer driving behavior, reduce accidents, and improve traffic flow, rather than simply increase enforcement.
With AI-powered monitoring now active, drivers are being advised to follow lane rules, avoid distractions, and ensure seatbelts are worn at all times.
