India Takes Over BRICS Chairmanship, Leads Expanded 10-Nation Group
On January 1, 2026, India officially took over the BRICS chairmanship, succeeding Brazil and marking the first time it will lead the group in its expanded format of 10 member countries. This milestone comes as BRICS continues to grow in global significance, representing major emerging economies that together influence international trade, development, and geopolitical collaboration.
During the BRICS 2025 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined India’s vision for the bloc, emphasizing cooperation and sustainable growth. He remarked, “We’ll continue to work closely on all key issues... Our goal will be to redefine BRICS as Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.” Under India’s leadership, the group is expected to focus on promoting innovation-driven solutions, strengthening economic resilience, and fostering sustainable development initiatives across member countries.
This new phase of BRICS leadership not only highlights India’s growing diplomatic and strategic role on the global stage but also signals a renewed commitment among emerging economies to collaborate on solutions for pressing global challenges.
