Why UAE National Day Is Now Called Eid Al Etihad: What It Means for Residents

One Last Public Holiday for the Year: Eid Al Etihad-

The UAE is preparing to celebrate its final public holiday of the year Eid Al Etihad, formerly known as UAE National Day. While official announcements regarding the duration of the break have yet to be made for both government and private sectors, residents are already speculating about the possibility of an extended four- or five-day weekend.

The rebranding of National Day to Eid Al Etihad reflects a deeper emphasis on the spirit of unity (Etihad) that defines the nation’s founding and its ongoing journey of progress since December 2, 1971, when the seven emirates united to form the United Arab Emirates.

What Does Eid Al Etihad Mean?

The term “Eid Al Etihad” translates to “Festival of the Union.”

  • Eid means “festival” or “celebration” in Arabic,

  • Etihad means “union.”

The name change is intended to highlight the sense of national togetherness and shared identity values that the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Founding Father, sought to instill in the country’s people.

The new name also aligns with the UAE’s efforts to integrate cultural and linguistic authenticity into national observances, placing Arabic terminology at the forefront of official designations.

How Long Will the Eid Al Etihad Holiday Last?

According to the UAE Cabinet Resolution No. (27) of 2024 Concerning Public Holidays, the holiday for Eid Al Etihad (December 2–3) falls midweek this year.

There’s speculation that Monday, December 1, could also be declared a holiday creating a five-day break that would run from Saturday through Wednesday.

Alternatively, if the Cabinet opts to shift the holiday to the start of the week, as permitted under the resolution (except for Eid holidays), residents could enjoy a four-day weekend, from Saturday to Tuesday.

Official confirmation is expected closer to the date.

Planning Your Leave Around the Holiday?

For many employees, this final break of the year offers a chance to maximize remaining annual leave. With many companies requiring advance approval for holiday requests, workers are already strategizing how to combine weekends with public holidays to extend their time off.

It’s important to remember that employers have the final say on whether leave requests are approved, as policies can differ between public and private sector contracts. Planning early can help secure time off before peak travel dates

A Celebration of Unity and Progress-

Beyond being a public holiday, Eid Al Etihad is a time for residents and citizens alike to celebrate the UAE’s unity, heritage, and achievements. From fireworks and cultural parades to family gatherings and concerts, the nation-wide festivities reflect the shared pride and optimism of living in one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse nations.
