Oman’s Sultan Haitham holds call with Iran’s President Pezeshkian amid regional tensions
Haitham bin Tariq, Sultan of Oman, held a phone call with Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran, on March 12, 2026, following recent military escalations in the region. During the discussion, Sultan Haitham condemned recent attacks on Omani territory, describing them as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and of international law.
The Sultan also reaffirmed Oman’s long-standing policy of neutrality, stressing that the Sultanate does not wish to be drawn into regional conflicts or allow its territory to be used as a base for military operations.
Both leaders emphasized the urgent need for de-escalation and restraint. Sultan Haitham called on all parties to prioritize diplomatic dialogue to prevent the situation from escalating into a broader regional conflict.
President Pezeshkian expressed appreciation for Oman’s traditional mediating role in regional affairs. The Sultanate reiterated that lasting security in the Gulf region can only be achieved through mutual respect, cooperation, and non-interference among states.
The diplomatic outreach follows reports of unidentified drone or missile activity over Omani airspace, prompting authorities in Oman to tighten security measures while maintaining the country’s longstanding role as a regional mediator.
