Trump praises Gulf leaders’ “bravery” amid Iran tensions, criticises NATO
At the high-profile Future Investment Initiative, Donald Trump praised leaders of key Gulf nations for their response to escalating tensions with Iran, highlighting what he described as their “bravery” during a period of intense regional instability.
Trump specifically commended leadership in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, thanking Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani by name for his role amid what he called “tremendous” and “unexpected” attacks.
The remarks come against the backdrop of a rapidly escalating conflict involving Iran, which has seen missile and drone strikes targeting US allies across the Gulf region, raising concerns over security, energy infrastructure, and regional stability.
Trump also extended his praise to Bahrain and Kuwait, describing them as “stand-up” partners, and went further to compare their response favorably to that of NATO.
In a pointed critique, the US president suggested that NATO allies had not provided sufficient support during the ongoing conflict, reinforcing earlier comments where he questioned the alliance’s commitment and value to the United States.
The comments underscore a widening divide between Washington and some of its Western allies, even as ties with Gulf nations appear to be strengthening amid shared security concerns. Gulf countries have been increasingly vocal about the need for stronger measures against Iran’s military capabilities, particularly following repeated attacks affecting energy routes and infrastructure.
Trump’s remarks at the investment forum highlight shifting geopolitical dynamics, with Gulf nations playing a more prominent role in regional security discussions while the US reassesses traditional alliances in Europe.
