ADFD Launches $2 Billion “Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform” to Boost Global Water Security
Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has unveiled the “Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform”, a landmark initiative aimed at accelerating development projects, unlocking investment opportunities, and supporting innovative solutions to advance global water security.
The platform is set to mobilise $2 billion (Dh7.34 billion) from local and international financing institutions. In its initial phase, ADFD will allocate $1 billion (Dh3.67 billion) over five years, from 2026 to 2030, targeting approximately 10 million beneficiaries worldwide.
The initiative focuses on strengthening water and food security in developing countries, providing access to clean and safe water, and promoting innovative technologies for efficient water resource management. It will also foster strategic partnerships to enhance co-financing, sustainability, and global collaboration, reinforcing the UAE’s leadership in international development.
The platform aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all.
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, ADFD Director-General, said:
“This initiative stands as a key pillar of our 2030 strategy, reinforcing our mandate to deliver sustainable, high-impact solutions. Through this platform, we aim to strengthen our engagement with the international community to secure essential resources for future generations.”
He added that local and international partners are encouraged to participate through joint financing, strategic partnerships, and knowledge exchange.
Fatima Ateeq Al Mazrouei, Support Services Department Director at ADFD, highlighted that the initiative is based on strategic studies and global benchmarking identifying pressing water challenges. She noted the platform will:
-
Sign cooperation agreements for high-impact water projects
-
Finance innovative programs to strengthen water security
-
Support scientific research and youth-led initiatives
-
Organise awareness campaigns on water-related issues
The platform will utilise a diverse range of financing tools, including development financing, private sector investment support, export financing, guarantees, and equity investments in companies, providing flexible solutions tailored to project needs and country priorities.
The launch marks a significant milestone in ADFD’s efforts to expand its global impact, demonstrating the UAE’s commitment to water security as a strategic development priority and ensuring sustainable resources for communities worldwide.
