UAE sets strict AI rules in schools, bans use for students under 13

The UAE Ministry of Education has introduced a comprehensive new framework regulating the use of generative AI in schools, setting firm boundaries as the country shapes the future of digital learning.

Under the new guidelines, students under the age of 13 are prohibited from using AI tools. Older students may access approved AI platforms only under direct teacher supervision. The use of AI during examinations is strictly banned to safeguard academic integrity and prevent misuse.

The framework includes strong protections around student privacy, the misuse of deepfakes, copyrighted content, and the use of unapproved platforms. The measures aim to ensure that artificial intelligence enhances the educational experience without undermining originality, critical thinking, or ethical standards.

Officials emphasized that AI is intended to support, not replace, core learning skills such as analysis, creativity, and independent reasoning.

The move reflects the UAE’s broader ambition to lead in artificial intelligence and digital transformation while maintaining clear ethical guardrails. By introducing age-based restrictions and supervision requirements, the ministry is reinforcing a human-centered approach to technology in classrooms.

Education leaders say the framework sends a clear message: innovation must go hand in hand with responsibility.

As AI tools become more embedded in daily life, the UAE’s structured approach positions it among countries proactively defining how emerging technologies should be integrated into education systems.
